PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The 14th ranked University of Washington women's golf team posted a fifth-place finish at the second annual Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational on Saturday after carding a 34-over 898 (291-297-310) in windy conditions at the El Tigre Golf and Country Club in Puerto Vallarta.
"We did not handle the wind well at all today and it was reflected in our scores," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We need to get a lot tougher in these last few events as we head into the Pac-12 Championships and postseason play."
Junior Wenyung Keh led the Huskies to their four top five team showing of the season as she finished 14th overall with a 7-over 223 (72-74-77). She opened the final 18 holes at even par through seven but went four-over during the next five holes. After a birdie on the 13th, Keh posted bogeys on 16 and 17 en route to her final round score of 5-over to move her total to 7-over 223. She has yet to finish below the top 25 in the six tournaments she has competed in this season.
Fellow junior Julianne Alvarez also finished in the top 25 as she tied for 15th with an 8-over 224 (71-72-81). Following strong play in her first two rounds, Alvarez's final 18 were a little rockier. There were a few bright spots as she birdied the par five fourth and finished the day with a birdie on the par five 18th and posted par on 10 of her 18 holes. The tie for 15th is her fourth top 25 showing this season.
Freshman Rino Sasaki carded a 12-over 228 (71-78-79) to finish tied for 32nd while junior Sarah Rhee climbed one spot over the final day into a tie for 42nd at 14-over 230 (78-75-77). Rounding out the UW squad was sophomore Karen Miyamoto who posted a 17-over 233 (77-78-78) to tie for 50th.
The Huskies have just two more tournaments to fine tune their game before hosting the Pac-12 Championships April 22-24 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle. Up next is the Lady Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., March 23-25.
