Kobayashi, Wong Dominate In 6-1 Win Over Alabama
February 09, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong dominated the day for No. 24 Washington women's tennis in the 6-1 win over Alabama on Friday in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"We came out with the right mindset in doubles," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "It always helps to get that point and go into singles up 1-0. I was happy with how Vanessa and Miki got on and off the court pretty quickly to give us the 3-0 lead. I didn't think it was our best day, but we competed and finished matches. I was impressed with how girls closed out sets and matches maybe not playing their best tennis. It gives us a lot of things to work on and a lot of positives."
Washington improves to 5-2 on the year after handing Stephenson's alma mater Alabama its first loss of the year. The Crimson Tide dropped to 9-1 on the year.
At No. 2 doubles, Kenadi Hance and Katarina Kopcalic took the lead early and never looked back. They broke serve to win their set, 6-2. The No. 3 duo of Stacey Fung and Alexis Prokopuik struggled, however. They lost their set with the same score, 6-2.
After trailing by a game early, Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong took their first lead at No. 1 doubles at 4-3. They won the remaining games of the set to win, 6-3, and clinch the doubles point.
The duo of Wong and Kobayashi followed up their doubles win with dominant singles wins. They both won their singles matches with the same score, 6-0, 6-1.
On court four, Prokopuik got off to a strong start, going up 3-0. Her Alabama opponent fought back to get within one at 5-3, but Prokopuik finished it off to take the set. The second set was closer, the two trading games back and forth. It took a tiebreaker to decide the match, with Prokopuik winning the tiebreaker 7-2.
Like her teammates on court one, Kopcalic on court six fell behind before fighting back to go up, 4-3. With a 5-5 tie, she won two games in a row to win the first set, 7-5. Her second set was close as well, but Kopcalic won by two games, 6-4.
Fung got down early in the first set, trailing 3-0. She won five-straight games to take the 5-3 lead. She had the chance to win the set, but No. 89 Andie Daniell battled back to take it instead, 7-5. Fung battled back in the second set to win, 6-4, forcing a third set. They played a third-set tiebreaker, which Fung won 10-6 to take the match.
Hance struggled on court five. She lost in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
The Dawgs are back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Portland and Eastern Washington starting at 2 p.m. PT.
