SEATTLE – Like a broken record, Husky freshman Iman Brown broke the school record once again tonight in the 200-meter dash. Brown led a group of Husky sprinters that hit the road for the first time this year, traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the Don Kirby Invitational, where she smashed her own school record set just two weeks ago.
Brown, the Garfield High grad, had dipped just under the previous school record at the UW Invitational when she ran 23.85 seconds, but today she crushed that mark with a time of 23.51 seconds, which is converted to 23.58 seconds due to the altitude of racing at New Mexico.
Along with the action in New Mexico, Washington got the annual Husky Classic off and running tonight in the Dempsey. Only a few Dawgs competed this evening, but Saturday will be a full day for the full squad, starting at 9 a.m.
At the Don Kirby Invite, Husky senior Jacopo Spanò competed for the first time this season and ran a solid 200-meters time of 21.68 seconds (21.75 converted) to lead the men tonight. Freshman Evan Mafilas crossed in 21.80 (21.87 converted) and sophomore Khalil Winfrey won his heat in 21.81 (21.88 converted).
Sophomore Jason Palmer had a big indoor PR in the 400-meters, winning his heat in 48.50 which converts to 48.61.
Senior Hanna Tarleton continued her impressive run of PRs through the first month of the season as she finished in 24.76 for 200-meters (24.83 converted). Sophomore Darhian Mills crossed in 25.21, Imani Apostol ran 25.28, Raquel Tjernagel went 25.34 and Carly Lester finished in 25.60 to round out the 200-meter times.
Lester also raced at 400-meters earlier in the day, finishing in 56.99, with Mills and Carolyn Birkenfeld both posting times of 57.23.
Freshman Jelani Heath was in the long jump at New Mexico, going 17-11 ¾ on her best attempt.
In the Dempsey, the 200-meters was featured as well. Christian Young had a PR of 22.31 seconds and freshman Kemuel Santana ran 22.39 with freshman Kevin Liu crossing in 22.56.
Redshirt freshman Connor Jost improved his weight throw PR by a couple of feet today, as he threw 53-9 ¾.
One flight of pole vault was completed tonight, with freshman Allyson Ely getting a season-best make of 11-7 ¼ for the women.
