Singles Wins The Day For Huskies
February 04, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – No. 24 Washington women's tennis bounced back in singles to earn a 5-2 win over Denver on Sunday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"We knew Denver was a good team and that they were going to compete hard," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "I was really happy with the way the girls responded, especially after losing the doubles point. We didn't play our best doubles this weekend, but I thought the girls bounced back and played tough in the big moments today."
Washington (4-2) won five of the six available singles points after Denver (2-2) won the doubles points. The Pioneers won the No. 1 and 2 doubles sets to earn the point.
No. 1 and 2 doubles struggled for the Huskies, both going down 3-0 early. Kenadi Hance and Katarina Kopcalic lost their set at No. 2, 6-1. Facing set point on court one, Miki Kobayashi and Vanessa Wong won two games in a row. However, they eventually lost, 6-2, with Denver clinching the doubles point.
Alexis Prokopuik and Stacey Fung were the bright spot for Washington in doubles. They won the first three games. They were up 5-3 when the doubles point had already been decided and their set was called.
No. 6 Fung took on No. 65 Julia O'Loughlin on court one. Fung dominated the first set, 6-0. The second set was more of a battle. The two traded games until it was tied at 6-6, forcing a tiebreaker. They once again went back and forth until Fung led 6-5, winning the final point after Loughlin returned Fung's deep shot out of bounds.
After a tough go in doubles, No. 114 Wong bounced back, taking her first set, 6-1, and sweeping the second set, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Prokopuik took the lead and didn't look back, winning the match, 6-3, 6-2.
On court six, Kopcalic traded the lead with her opponent, Camille Verden-Anderson, in the first set. Down 6-5, Kopcalic rallied to get to the tiebreaker at 6-6, which she won 8-6 to take the set. She took the second set as well, 6-4, to clinch the match for Washington.
Hance got up 4-0 before the Pioneers' Hada Chang battled back to tie it up 5-5. They also went to tiebreakers, but the Dawgs came out on the losing end this time. However, Hance bounced back to win the second set, 6-2, and force a third set.
Kobayashi continued to struggle in singles, dropping her match, 6-2, 6-1. That was the lone singles point for the Pioneers.
The Huskies are home again next weekend. UW will host Alabama and Portland on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
