Washington Splits Doubleheader on Sunday

SEATTLE – After a disappointing start to the day against Baylor, No. 32 Washington women's tennis bounced back with a strong 7-0 victory over Portland State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday.
Following a third-straight loss in a 4-1 setback to Baylor, Washington (8-5) responded well against Portland State. Freshman Vanessa Wong had a solid day, winning both of her doubles sets and singles matches. She is now 9-3 in 2018 singles matches and 10-2 in doubles.
Baylor
After a close loss in doubles competition, UW looked to be in a good spot in singles as they held early leads in four of the six matches. However, this would not last as Baylor rallied to win three singles matches to Washington's one win.
In doubles competition UW jumped out to an early lead after a swift 6-1 victory by the No. 1 doubles duo Miki Kobayashi and Wong, but Baylor managed to come back with a 6-5 victory at No. 3 doubles to even the score. In the final matchup, Baylor managed to win a competitive 7-6 set to secure a doubles win.
Wong won the lone singles victory for the Dawgs after defeating Kristina Sorokolet 6-4, 6-2 on court two. Wong jumped out to an early lead in set one and never looked back as she claimed the only point of the day for Washington.
Miki Kobayashi jumped out to an 6-1 victory in set one, but her opponent Camilla Abbate answered back with two-straight 6-1 sets of her own to win the match for Baylor.
On court four there was a fiery competition in set one as Alexis Prokopuik managed to rally from being down 4-5 to tie it up at 6-6. Baylor's Angie Shakhraichuk was able to win the tiebreaker, taking set one 7-6 before completing her victory with a 6-1 second-set win, clinching the match for the Bears.
In No.1 singles, Stacey Fung and Baylor's Theresa Van Zyl had a spirited competition that was cut short. Fung took set one 6-3 and Van Zyl led set two 5-3 before the match was ended. Katarina Kopcalic's match at No. 6 singles also did not finish.

Portland State
The Huskies responded well to adversity by sweeping Portland State 7-0 in the second dual-match of the day. Washington jumped out to two quick victories in doubles to earn the point and never looked back from there. All singles matches were finished in two sets and in convincing fashion.
Washington swiftly dispatched of Portland State in doubles competition with new pairings. Both Wong and Prokopuik, and Hance and Fung won 6-1. Those two duos were even with their competitors 1-1 before winning five games in a row. On court one, Kobayashi and Kopcalic held a 3-2 lead before their game was called.
The Canadian Huskies started singles play on the right foot for the Huskies. No. 55 Wong defeated Siena Peri in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Kopcalic finished her day strong, beating Taylor Rees 6-0, 6-1. On court one, No. 12 Fung won in dominant fashion, defeating Alli Valk 6-2, 6-0.
Angela Li, competing in her second dual match of the year, won her match on court six. She outlasted Ashley Knecht in two sets 6-4, 6-2.
The final match to conclude was on court three between Kobayashi and Eszter Zador. This was a close match for much of the first set, but Kobayashi managed to pull away, winning the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-1.
