Pac-12 Pitcher Of The Week Among DeMers' Honors
February 26, 2018 | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO - Washington junior Joe DeMers (Martinez, Calif.) was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after throwing the first perfect game in UW history against UC Riverside on Saturday. It was the fifth perfect game in Pac-12 history and the ninth no-hitter in Washington history.
In the 8-0 victory at Husky Ballpark, DeMers needed just 84 pitches to retire all 27 Highlanders' hitters in order. The right-hander went to a three-ball count just once and threw fewer than 10 pitches in six innings, with a high of 13. DeMers, who has yet to allow an earned run in 15 innings pitched this season, also tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.
The last no hitter by the Huskies was a combined no-no on March 12, 2006 by Tim Lincecum and Nick Hagadone. In UW history, only five of the team's no hitters were nine innings long, making DeMers the fourth Husky to throw nine innings of no-hit ball.
It is the first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for DeMers and the 104th for a Husky.
Other honors have been rolling in during the week for DeMers. So far, he is one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week and has been selected as the National Pitcher of the week by NCBWA, Perfect Game and College Sports Madness.
