Huskies Set Program Record With Seventh Straight Shutout
February 17, 2018 | Softball
HUNTSVILLE, Texas β The #4 Washington Huskies set a new program record with their seventh consecutive shutout, blanking the Seton Hall Pirates 10-0 in five innings.Β Washington's previous record of six consecutive shutouts had been accomplished twice in 1995.
Samantha Manti and Kristin Cochran combined for the shutout.Β Manti went four innings, striking out four, while Cochran worked a scoreless fifth in her season debut.
Taryn Atlee had three RBI in the game, giving her 16 on the season and nine in her last four games.Β Atlee had a two-run single in the first inning that scored Taylor Van Zee and Kirstyn Thomas, who each had singles of their own earlier in the inning.
Kelly Burdick's speed created another run in the second inning.Β The centerfielder beat out an infield single on a ball that died in front of the circle.Β Burdick then stole second on the next pitch and advanced to third as the throw sailed into the outfield.Β The next pitch got away from the catcher, allowing Burdick to come around to score and make it 3-0.
After a Van Zee double, her fifth in the last four games, Sis Bates got under a ball and sent it high into the wind for a home run over the right-center wall, extending the lead to 5-0.
After a run in the third, the Huskies put the game comfortably out of reach with a four-run fourth.Β Thomas started this with a double, eventually scoring on an RBI groundout by Rachel Ogasawara.Β Atlee picked up her third RBI with a single past the second baseman after that for a 9-0 run.Β Nawai Kaupe's hustle down the line forced a bad throw later in the inning, allowing a run to score for the final 10-0 margin.
