February 16, 2018 | Softball
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The #4 Washington Huskies earned another shutout win, defeating Wichita State 8-0 behind 12 Taran Alvelo strikeouts and two-RBI days from Julia DePonte and Taryn Atlee. The Huskies improved to 7-0 with the win, tying the school record for consecutive shutouts.
Alvelo stretched her shutout streak to 19.0 innings and struck out 12 batters in the game. Alvelo now has 39 strikeouts this season and has thrice struck out ten or more batters. Ten of the first 11 outs of the game came by strikeout for Alvelo, who did not allow a hit in any of the final three innings.
Taylor Van Zee started the game with a double as the Huskies put the first batter on in four of five innings. Washington would end up with two runs in the inning thanks to DePonte sending her second home run of the season into the seats. It was the sixth time in seven games the Huskies have scored multiple runs in the first inning.
The second inning saw the Huskies put two more runs on the board. With Atlee and Kelly Burdick on, Van Zee singled into center to score one. The throw to try and get Burdick taking third bounced off the Husky centerfielder's leg and away into foul territory, allowing Burdick to score and Van Zee to move to third.
Sis Bates made it five games in a row with an RBI a few pitches later. Bates singled, allowing Van Zee to come in to score easily and make it 5-0.
Atlee would add an RBI double to the centerfield wall in the third inning for two more runs. DePonte and Noelle Hee, who walked earlier in the inning, came around to score for a 7-0 lead.
The game ended with an RBI single by Burdick, allowing Nawai Kaupe to score the Huskies' eighth run. Kaupe had singled earlier in the inning during her first collegiate start.
