Huskies Complete Tournament Sweep With 15-0 Win
February 11, 2018 | Softball
PEORIA, Ill. – A pair of grand slams during an 11-run sixth inning carried the Huskies to a 15-0 win over Bradley Sunday. The Huskies swept their opening week tournament, going 5-0 while allowing just three runs total. Sis Bates and Taryn Atlee each hit grand slams today, while Kirstyn Thomas hit her fifth home run of the season.
The 11 runs in the sixth inning were the most in a single inning by the Huskies since February 15, 2014, when they scored 12 against Southern Illinois in the first inning.
Samantha Manti worked two scoreless innings to start the game for the Huskies, striking out four in that time. Taran Alvelo came on in relief for the game's final four innings, allowing just two baserunners and no hits while fanning six.
Despite a Taylor Van Zee double to start the game, the Huskies were held scoreless in the first inning for the first time this season.
Washington's offense broke the tie in the third inning when Thomas ripped a line drive over the leftfield fence and into the outfield of the adjoining field. That home run scored Van Zee, who had doubled again earlier in the inning, and Bates, who had drawn a walk and reached base in all five of her plate appearances in the game.
Amirah Milloy pushed another run across the plate in the fifth with an RBI single. Milloy drove in Bates, who had singled earlier in the inning.
The big sixth inning began with Kelly Burdick, who knocked a triple over the head of the rightfielder with one out. After three straight walks scored Burdick, Atlee took the first pitch she saw in her at-bat for her first career grand slam, making it a 10-0 game.
Trysten Melhart, Emma Helm, and Burdick would all single after that to load the bases back up. Van Zee drew another RBI walk for an 11-0 lead.
Bates then got everything behind a ball for the second grand slam of the inning. Bates, who drove in five runs in the game, ended the scoring and made it a 15-0 final margin.
