UW In 14th After Day One Of Ka'anapali Collegiate In Maui
November 02, 2018 | Men's Golf
MAUI – The University of Washington men's golf team finished round one of its final fall tournament, the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, in 14th place with a 1-over 285. The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Hawaii and UW will be paired with Sacramento State, Houston and George Washington to start round two at 11:30 a.m. PT on Saturday.
"I was disappointed in today's overall performance," said head coach Alan Murray. "The course was there for the taking but we struggled to take advantage and make an impact. Our best player who's score counts is in 47th and when that happens it will be hard for us to have a good team finish. Our individuals, Padraic and Shamu, had fine rounds and I was proud of how they competed. Noah bounced back nicely but I believe our guys are talented enough to score well on this course."
Sophomore Shamu Bodhidatta, competing as an individual, had UW's best score of the day posting a 3-under 68. He started the day with a birdie to put him at 1-under for his next five holes before his only error of the day. He followed by going 3-under en route to tying for 20th.
Also playing as an individual was freshman Padraic Sim who carded a 2-under 69 and is tied for 34th. His round featured three birdies and an eagle over his first nine holes getting him to 4-under. Sim's eagle came on the par-5 sixth hole and he was one of 22 players in the 116-player field to record at least one eagle on day one.
In the scores that counted for the Huskies' team placement, UW was led by sophomore Noah Woolsey. His 1-under 70 places him tied for 47th following a round that started with a double on his first hole. Woolsey responded quickly and was able to get his score under par thanks to six birdies to just three errors over the next 17.
On stroke back was sophomore Jan Schneider who's even-par 71 has him sitting tied for 59th. He was followed by junior Henry Lee and freshman Robert Moran who each carded a 1-over 72 to tie for 71st. Rounding out UW's lineup was freshman Paul Margolis who posted a 2-over 73.
"We'll see how we come out tomorrow but sadly for us we can't seem to get it done in tournaments," said Murray. "That's what it comes down to in this game, performing when it counts. We will have some soul searching in the offseason and if we want to contend in and win the bigger prizes in collegiate golf, we need to get better, so we have two more rounds tomorrow and hopefully we can get some guys playing well."
