SEATTLE - The final week of the regular season arrives and with it the final regular season home match for the 19th-ranked Husky volleyball team. The Dawgs hope that with a couple wins this week they might be able to pick up a couple more home matches in the NCAA tournament. But first up, this Wednesday evening, the day before Thanksgiving, the Huskies get to give thanks to Destiny Julye on Senior Night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington will honor its lone senior before taking on the 17th-ranked Oregon Ducks in a match with a 6 p.m. first serve.
Then the Huskies (18-10, 10-8) will head east for an encore to Friday's Apple Cup in football. Saturday, the Dawgs and 20th-ranked Cougars meet in Bohler Gym to close the regular season with a 4 p.m. match. Both matches this week will air on Pac-12 Networks, Wednesday's on the national channel and Saturday's on Pac-12 Washington.
Washington will look to bounce back after having its five-match win streak snapped on Sunday by No. 2-ranked Stanford. This week provides the Huskies two more NCAA tourney-caliber teams to measure themselves against before the NCAA tournament begins next week. Washington should qualify for a 17th consecutive NCAA tournament as it carries an RPI of 19 going into this final week, but wins over Oregon (RPI of 21) and Washington State (RPI of 12) could move the Dawgs up a few more spots and put them in serious discussion for a top-16 seed, which would mean hosting NCAA opening round matches. The Huskies could also still finish anywhere from a tie for second to eighth in the final Pac-12 standings as they are currently tied with Washington State for fourth at 10-8.
Wednesday the Huskies pay tribute to senior Destiny Julye, the first Husky to play all four seasons for Head Coach Keegan Cook. Julye, the product of Tehachapi, Calif., has played nearly every role for the Huskies over the past four seasons. She has career-highs in kills, aces, digs, and blocks this year and is leading the Huskies with 34 aces. Julye has over 400 career kills and over 500 career points scored. Also a standout on the beach volleyball team, Julye has been part of two Pac-12 Championship squads and will play in a fourth NCAA tournament starting next week.
The Huskies and Oregon meet for the first time this season on Wednesday. Oregon is currently 17th in the coaches poll and 21st in the RPI, having gone 18-10 overall and 11-7 in Pac-12 to currently sit in third-place. Last week Oregon swept Utah at home but then fell in five sets to Colorado. In Pac-12 matches, Oregon is second in the league with a .258 attack percentage while holding opponents to a .211 mark. The Ducks are second in kills (14.84) and assists (13.85) per set and they are fourth in blocks at 2.44 and third in digs at 16.42. Senior August Raskie is second in assists per set at 11.81 and freshman libero Brooke Nuneviller is second in digs per set with 5.34. Junior Ronika Stone is seventh in attack percentage at .333 and ninth in blocks at 1.15. Senior Lindsey Vander Weide leads the team with 3.61 kills per set in conference.
Washington State will host Oregon State before facing the Huskies. Back in the Pac-12 opener on Sept. 20, the Huskies won a five-setter over WSU as Samantha Drechsel had 21 kills and Taylor Mims had 18 for the Cougars. Mims and fellow senior McKenna Woodford are nearly equal in kills per set in Pac-12 play, with Mims posting 3.63 and Woodford at 3.66. Junior setter Ashley Brown is sixth in the Pac-12 in assists per set at 10.45 and junior middle Jocelyn Urias is fifth in aces at 0.30 per set. Junior libero Alexis Dirige is sixth in digs with 4.47. As a team, WSU is third in blocks per set with 2.46, but ninth in attack percentage at .211.
