Menzies Scores Again as Huskies Down San Diego State, 2-0
October 28, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Scott Menzies scored his team-best ninth goal of the season and tallied a goal in each of his last four matches as Washington wrapped up a big Pac-12 weekend with its second-straight win, beating San Diego State 2-0 in a Pac-12 match at Husky Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 10-7-0 on the season and move back into third place in the conference at 5-4-0 with one Pac-12 match remaining. The Aztec fall to 6-8-1 and to 1-7-0 in league play.
For the second-straight match, the Huskies' defense was impressive, holding San Diego State to just seven shots in the match only a few days after holding UCLA to three shots in a 2-0 win on Thursday.
Washington benefited from an own goal to open the scoring in the 66th minute as an SDSU defender headed the ball into his own net following a corner kick by Kyle Coffee.
Six minutes later, the Huskies added a big insurance goal. Blake Bodily started the play with an impressive burst of speed to beat his defender down the left side. He then crossed it into the box where Menzies found himself wide open about 10 yards out from the goal. He easily finished with a quick shot to extend the lead to 2-0.
"When Blake gets himself going vertically, he's hard to handle," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "He got himself in the corner, someone made an early front post run that brought the defenders and he cut it back and Menzies had the great finish. And there is no one guy you want in the box in that situation at the time."
It was the ninth goal of the season for Menzies who has now scored a goal in each of his last four matches.
Coming off the heels of a 2-0 shutout win over UCLA, this weekend marks the first time since San Diego State joined the conference in 2005 that the Huskies swept the two teams at home in the same season. The Huskies accomplished the feat of sweeping teams on the road for the first time last season, earning a pair of 1-0 victories in Southern California.
"It was fantastic for us to get two clean sheets. We weren't chasing games, and if you aren't chasing games, you are going to play better," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "We weren't pretty today, but we were effective."
"These are tough weekends and to ever get two in a row is tough," said Clark. "I think we are clicking at the right time. Defensively we've been really good. Freddy (Kleemann) came in again for us (at center back). You'd think he was a veteran out there."
Kleeman, who filled in on the backline for the second-straight game, helped lead the defense which posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the first two matches of the season. Bryce Logan picked up his second-straight shutout in goal for the Huskies, recording three saves including a pair of acrobatic saves in the final 10 minutes of the match.
