Dawgs Finish 15th at Tavistock Collegiate Invitational
October 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
WINDERMERE, Fla. β The University of Washington men's golf team earned a 15th-place finish at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday posting a three-day score of 32-over 896 (287-308-301). Β
Β
The Huskies, who were competing against seven of the nation's top 25 teams on one of the most prestigious golf courses (Isleworth Golf & Country Club), were led by freshman Paul Margolis who tied for 38th. Washington has one remaining fall tournament before spring play begins in January.
Β
"We got off to a really tough start and just swam against the tide all day," said head coach Alan Murray. "Jan was our best score on the day and he was the reverse of the other guys in that he finished with some bogeys. Paul, Noah and Henry all had somewhat disappointing days but we just have to keep working hard and quite frankly get better. This was a really strong field against some of the very best teams were here. We were a long way off this week and if we are to compete with them, we need to get much better. We have an opportunity around the corner in Hawaii for our next tournament so it's a case of taking advantage of the next few days we have in Seattle and getting focused and working hard to be better."
Β
Margolis was UW's top scorer during the event as he placed tied for 38th with a 6-over 222 (73-74-75). Despite his scoring raising by one stroke each day, Margolis was fairly steady throughout the tournament. His final scorecard only had three errors as he made par on 14 holes and added a birdie on the 16th.
Β
Finishing tied for 46th was sophomore Jan Schneider who had UW's best round on Tuesday as he carded a 2-over 74 en route to a three-round total of 7-over 223 (73-76-74). Schneider had a great start to the day making the turn clean at 1-under par but finished with three bogeys over his last seven holes.
Β
Sophomore Noah Woolsey earned a tie for 56th after finishing with a 10-over 226 (69-81-76) while freshman Padraic Sim moved into scoring position for UW on Tuesday as he carded a 4-over 76 en route to a 13-over 229, tying for 66th. Sim went four-under over his final seven holes after a rocky start which saw him get to seven over after just seven holes.
Β
"I was really pleased with Padraic playing his back nine at 4-under to end up counting for us today," added Murray. "It would have been easy for him to just mail it in after his start but he battled hard and should take some confidence that resilient finish to his round."
Β
Rounding out the UW contingent was junior Henry Lee who finished 65th at 12-over 228 (72-79-77).
Β
Washington's final fall tournament takes place Nov. 2-4 at the Ka'anapali Collegiate in Maui, Hawaii. The Huskies will then break until the end of January when spring play begins.
