October 20, 2018 | Women's Golf
STANFORD – The University of Washington women's golf team saw a huge improvement during round two at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday climbing seven spots into a tie for fourth at 3-over 571 (296-275). The Huskies improved upon their round one score by 21 strokes following their 9-under 275. They were led by senior Julianne Alvarez who carded a four-under 67 and is tied for fifth.
"I was really excited to see the team come out with energy today," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "They played considerably better than yesterday thanks to that jump in energy. The team is continuing to learn every day whether the number is good or not so good. I was super happy to see the Kiwis (Julianne and Wenyung Keh) shoot under par. They've both been working super hard on their mental game as well as their physical game. All around it was a good team effort today."
Alvarez climbed 15 spots up the board on Saturday with a round that featured five birdies. She finished at 4-under 67, her lowest round of the season and currently sits at 3-under 139 (72-67). She opened the day by going 2-under over her first nine holes and no blemishes. She again birdied her first hole after the turn and added four-straight pars before her first error of the day. Quickly responded she tacked on back-to-back birdies en route to her 4-under.
Senior Sarah Rhee sits just behind her on the leaderboard in a tie for eighth. Her two-day total is 2-under 140 (73-67). She matched Alvarez on Saturday also posting a 4-under 67 that shot her 21 spots up the leaderboard. Her round was clean with no errors just the four birdies.
Also making a huge move up the scoring ladder was senior Wenyung Keh. She jumped 27 spots thanks to a 3-under 68 in her second round. Her even-par 142 (74-68) has her in a tie for 13th heading into Sunday's final 18. Washington's top three finishers on Saturday combined for just two bogeys and 13 birdies.
Freshman Martha Lewis also improved upon her round one score as she went 2-over 73 to put her two-round total at 8-over 150 (77-73). She is now tied for 60th. Rounding out the UW group is junior Alice Duan who's 11-over 153 (78-75) has her tied for 76th.
The final round of the Stanford Invitational will tee off at 8:30 a.m. with Washington being paired with Pepperdine and Arizona State.
