January 25, 2018 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – After a victorious home opener last weekend, the Washington GymDawgs hit the road for the Metroplex Challenge on Saturday, January 27. Joining Washington at the competition will be #2 LSU, #4 UCLA, and #28 North Carolina State, making it the fourth time this season Washington has faced teams ranked in the top five.
Last week the GymDawgs defeated #23 California 196.325-194.850. The team score of 196.325 was the highest of the season for the GymDawgs. Evanni Roberson had two third-place finishes en route to a score of 39.300 in the all-around, the highest mark by a GymDawg this year. Hailey Burleson and Maya Washington each matched Washington's season-high on floor with scores of 9.900. Haley Roy's score of 9.875 was the highest achieved vault score to date.
The GymDawgs have continuously improved their team total over the last four competitions. This will be the first time Washington has competed at the Metroplex Challenge since 2016, when the GymDawgs took third place with a 196.175 score.
It will be the fourth competition of the season for LSU, who has put up scores above 197 in all three competition thus far. LSU scored a 197.450 against Alabama last week, the highest mark for the Tigers this year and the third-highest score in any single competition in the nation this year.
This is the second time that Washington will see UCLA, the Bruins were also at Elevate the Stage earlier this season, a quad competition that UCLA won with a score of 197.200. UCLA had a 197.300 team score against Arizona last week.
North Carolina State is ranked 28th in the nation going into the Metroplex Challenge, including a 20th ranked floor team. The Wolfpack added almost two full points to their previous season-best with a 196.350 showing in a tri-meet last week. NC State has also defeated North Carolina and took first in a tri-meet with UIC and Northern Illinois earlier this season.
The GymDawgs will be featured on FloGymnastics live-steam of The Metroplex Challenge.
