Huskies Fall In Home Opener To No. 8 Red Raiders
January 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE โ In its dual match home opener at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, the Husky women's tennis team had a couple of top-25 wins in singles and doubles, but couldn't get the top-25 win in the team column, as eighth-ranked Texas Tech had too much depth in a 4-1 win over the Dawgs.
ย
Freshman Vanessa Wong continues to make a name for herself as she dispatched the 23rd-ranked player in the country in straight sets, and UW also had an impressive doubles win over the 21st-ranked duo but the Dawgs dropped to 1-1 while the Red Raiders, an NCAA quarterfinalist a year ago, won its season-opener.
ย
"The doubles point was definitely close," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "We had Miki (Kobayashi) out of the lineup and had a new team out there, and we just wanted to improve a lot in our doubles from Hawaii because we didn't play very well there. I thought we did, and we gave ourselves opportunities to win the doubles point, but unfortunately came up short.
ย
"After that point I still felt like we had a chance at every spot, but Texas Tech is tough, there's a reason they're No. 8 in the country. Vanessa had a big win today for us, Stacey was in a good position against a top-five player in the country, and I think there's just a lot to learn at this point in the season playing an opponent like that. I think we can get a lot out of this match."
ย
Doubles started about as well as could be for the Dawgs, as Kenadi Hance and Lana Slavica rolled to a 6-0 upset of Texas Tech's 21st-ranked team of Federici/Dvorak at the No. 1 spot. UW had early leads on courts two and three as well, but Texas Tech turned around No. 2, as Talaba/Maltby won five games in a row to defeat Wong and Katarina Kopcalic, 6-3, after UW was up 3-1. It all came down to the No. 3 spot, where Stacey Fung and Alexis Prokopuik went up 6-5 and then had 0-40 for match points against Valenstein/Rush. But the Raiders saved them all to hold and force a tiebreak. Texas Tech went up 4-0 in the breaker but UW evened it at 5-5. The teams traded points, with UW saving two Texas Tech match points, but couldn't get a lead, and the Raiders closed it out on their third chance, 9-7.
ย
In singles play, Wong and sixth-ranked Fung raced out to big leads and easily won their first sets, but all of the remaining four sets went to Texas Tech.
ย
Wong, ranked 115th, put away Felicity Maltby at the No. 2 singles spot, 6-1, 6-2, for the lone Husky singles point. The No. 1 spot was a marquee match between sixth-ranked Fung and fifth-ranked Gabriela Talaba, but it did not get to see a conclusion. Fung blanked Talaba, 6-0, in the first set, but Talaba answered with a 6-2 win in the second set. Fung had broken serve for a 3-1 lead and was serving in the third set when Texas Tech earned its fourth team point to clinch and the remaining two matches were halted.
ย
At No. 4 singles, Sarah Dvorak defeated the junior Hance, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Katarina Kopcalic lost at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to Tech's Alex Valenstein. The No. 6 singles match was won by Texas Tech's Lana Rush, 6-3, 6-2, over sophomore Lana Slavica. Senior Alexis Prokopuik was also trailing her No. 3 match, 4-6, 1-5, against Sabrina Federici when the match was halted.
