Siena Ruelas did not see any game action in 2017 but continued in her role as Sarah Shimer's understudy, ready to leap onto the field at a moment's notice. The California native has learned ably during her two years with the Huskies and will enter 2018 ready to provide some of the impressive play in net that has been a trademark of Washington teams.
What does it feel like to play at Husky Soccer Stadium?
Ruelas: Playing at Husky Soccer Stadium is unreal. The opportunity to play alongside your teammates, the ability to represent your school, and the chance to showcase one's hard work in front of so many is something words can't describe. The best way to put it is 'woah'.
What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the field?
Ruelas: The coaches have taught me numerous things on and off the field. One that always sticks in my mind is that at the end of the day the hard work, passion, devotion, and faith we put in determines what we get out.
What is it like to play in the Pac-12 Conference?
Ruelas: Playing in the Pac-12 is not an easy task. First of all you compete in one of the top D1 conferences in the nation. All teams are skilled and talented. All players are top athletes and we all share the desire to win. All in all, the Pac-12 is the conference of champs and everyone wants to be the best of this league.
What is your favorite thing about living in Seattle?
Ruelas: For me, I love the weather, the people, the natural beauty and the uniqueness of the city. Coming from Los Angeles, the way of life is a lot different here in Seattle and even though it's not what I'm used to down in SoCal, Seattle is a city that has come to claim my heart.
What are your favorite things to do in the summer in Seattle?
Ruelas: In my free time I love going into downtown, I often visit Pike Place, the SAM, and the U-district farmer's market. I also like to go swimming in the Montlake cut and cooking.
What are some of your earliest memories of playing soccer?
Ruelas: For me, I remember when I first tried the sport. I was absolutely terrible and couldn't dribble to save my life. What I loved was the freedom to run around and the excitement I had when I would score.
Who is your biggest inspiration in why you play soccer?
Ruelas: I would say my inspiration is my father by far. My dad has always made sacrifices to help me play my sport. From driving me to practices, games, private training, he would never say no to me when it came to my love for the sport. With his support, he inspires me to be the best I can be on the field every day.
What do you love most about playing soccer?
Ruelas: For me, I love the adrenaline rush, pressure, exhaustion and physical contact of the sport. Playing allows me to express myself and learn valuable life lessons.
Who were your favorite players growing up?
Ruelas: From the beginning I've always liked how the USMNT goalie Tim Howard plays. I really like how he demands, directs, and takes control out on the field. I also admire his work ethic and how he works for his team before himself.
Can you talk about some of the experiences that have been opened up to you through the sport?
Ruelas: Through soccer, I've learned the value of teamwork, dedication, work ethic, confidence, and respect. In playing soccer I've learned to put others above myself and how to contribute to others to help them get better and to succeed.
