SEATTLE - A four week, nine match road trip comes to a close this weekend for sixth-ranked Washington, as the second week of Pac-12 play takes the Huskies (12-1, 2-0 Pac-12) to visit the L.A. schools. Washington heads to Pauley Pavilion this Friday, Sept. 29, to take on 13th-ranked UCLA in a 7 p.m. match. Sunday will find the Dawgs in the Galen Center for a 1 p.m. match against 20th-ranked USC. The Bruins and Trojans will be UW's first top-25 opponents since the first week of the season.
The Huskies have won 10 matches in a row and got off to a 2-0 start in Pac-12 play last week but not without some drama. A big road win in four sets at Washington State was followed by a battle in Tempe, where Washington dropped the first two sets before fighting back to win in five. It was the first road comeback from 0-2 down for the Huskies since the 2013 Elite Eight match at USC.
UCLA got off to a 1-1 start in conference play last week, losing a five setter to the Trojans but then posting an impressive 3-1 win over then-No. 8 Oregon. UCLA's two nonconference losses came in back-to-back road matches at Nebraska, while the Bruins had big wins over San Diego and Hawaii. Freshman Mac May has won two Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards and she leads the team with 3.20 kills per set. Sophomore middle Madeleine Gates is hitting a team-best .343 with 1.50 blocks per set and 2.64 kills per set. Sarah Sponcil, a senior transfer from LMU, is leading the offense with 11.27 assists per set and Zana Muno is posting 4.27 digs per set. The Bruins advanced to the Elite Eight last season. Washington has won seven straight in the series. The teams met just once last year, in Seattle, a four set win for the Huskies.
The Trojans are one of four teams to go 2-0 in the opening Pac-12 weekend, upsetting their rivals at UCLA and then defeating Oregon State in a four setter. USC had a loss to Maryland, a team the Huskies defeated, but USC also knocked off Creighton, the only loss for the Huskies. USC also had strong nonconference wins over Michigan and setbacks to Northern Iowa and Kentucky. Sophomore Khalia Lanier is one of the top attackers in the conference, averaging 4.24 kills per set, but senior opposite Brittany Abercrombie is the reigning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week as she had 18 kills in both victories and is now hitting .354 for the year. USC is hitting .284 for the year but is being outblocked, 1.97 to 2.14. Victoria Garrick leads the back row with 4.11 digs per set. Washington won the only meeting between the teams last year and has won eight of the last 10 in the series.
