June 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 announced the members of the All-Conference All-Academic teams today for men's tennis, with Washington senior Gal Hakak earning First Team honors, Kawika Lam and Wendell Watanabe earning Second Team honors, and three Huskies earning honorable mention.
This is the third Pac-12 All-Academic honor for Hakak during his time at UW, and his second time being given First Team honors. The senior closed out his Washington career this past season with 68 wins in singles, while owning a .659 winning percentage in doubles. Hailing from Ra'anana, Israel, Hakak has earned a 3.74 GPA at Washington as an Economics major, and was recently tabbed the 2017 Pac-12 Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Earning his first All-Academic honor of his career, Lam has been tabbed a Second Team member with a 3.55 GPA as a Pre-Science major. On the court, the sophomore has been a large contributor in doubles, as he and fellow sophomore Sommer have been the winningest duos on the team in back-to-back seasons.
The team's second senior on the roster, Watanabe earned All-Pac-12 Second Team honors this season after being tabbed an honorable mention last year. During his time with the Dawgs on the court, the Duvall, Wash. native has been a staple in the team's doubles lineup, earning 47 career doubles victories during his career. Owning a 3.60 GPA, Watanabe has spent this past year as a member of the coaching cohort in the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership master's program here at Washington, and is set to graduate this summer.
Earning Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention this year for Washington were Foley, Sommer and Stewart. These are the first career All-Academic honors for sophomores Foley and Sommer, and second for Stewart, who was named honorable mention last year as well.
