Kirstyn Thomas' Walk-Off Homer Gets The Win For Washington
May 05, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE— Junior first baseman, Kirstyn Thomas, blasted a walk-off solo home run off the first pitch in the seventh inning for a 1-0 Washington (39-10) win over Stanford (18-28), Friday night.
"I thought it was a well-played ballgame," said Washington head coach Heather Tarr. "Defensively, both teams played really well and both pitchers threw really well.
"Our team battled hard. We had some momentum going at the end with some quality at bats."
Taran Alvelo (24-6) pitched a complete game for the Dawgs and struck out eight batters and giving up only three hits.
"Taran battled and stayed pitch-to-pitch and found a way to stay in the moment," Tarr said. "She had a couple massive strikeouts for us to close out some innings."
The Husky defense stayed alive all seven innings, forcing the Cardinal to leave 10 runners on base.
Aside from Thomas' solo shot in the seventh, she got on base with a double in the second inning.
Ali Aguilar, Sis Bates Taylor Van Zee and Julia DePonte also contributed at the plate with one hit each.
"I'm really proud of our team for sticking together and giving Kirstyn the opportunity for a walk-off," Tarr said. "Seeing that moment for someone like her is just so great."
The Pac-12 rivals will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT at Husky Softball Stadium. The series finale will take place on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT. Immediately following Sunday's game will be a ceremony to honor seniors Aguilar and Casey Stangel.
