Dawgs Primed To Start NCAA Run In Texas
May 24, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - The top athletes in the West will go toe to toe, and take on the Texas heat as well, as the NCAA Outdoor Championships get underway on Thursday with the West Preliminary Championships, hosted by the University of Texas. The 27 Husky individuals and two relays will be aiming for top-12 finishes at Mike A. Myers Stadium this week, in order to advance on to the final site of NCAAs, held in Eugene, Oregon June 7-10.
The NCAA Championships start with fields of 96 athletes in every individual event and 48 relays, splitting those fields into a West and East region. Forty-eight individuals in each event and 24 relays are on hand in Texas while the Eastern half meets this week in Lexington, Kentucky. Out of each region will come 12 qualifiers to continue on at Oregon. All individual track events from 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds in Austin, while the 3,000m steeplechase, the 5k and 10k races will have one round, and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays will have one round as well. Throws and horizontal jumps will take all 48 entries and give them all three throws each, while the high jump and pole vault will keep moving up until only 12 competitors remain.
After the initial fields were announced, Washington was granted two more entries due to injury scratches from other schools, as freshman Emmy Engle was added to the women's javelin, and the next day Kaitlin Zinsli earned a spot in the women's pole vault.
