May 21, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE— The No. 7 Washington softball team (46-11) capped off an extraordinary weekend at Husky Softball Stadium with a 4-2 victory over No. 21 Michigan (43-13-1) in the NCAA Regional championship game Sunday evening.
Washington will now host Utah, the winner of the Salt Lake Regional, in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional next weekend at Husky Softball Stadium. This will be the Huskies' 11th NCAA Super Regional appearance. Specific dates and times will be announced after the completion of all NCAA Regional contests.
Washington collected five hits from Kelly Burdick (2-for-2), Taylor Van Zee, Morganne Flores and Ali Aguilar in the win. Flores and Aguilar drove in two runs apiece for the Purple and Gold.
With the game locked 2-2 in the sixth inning, Flores drove a two-RBI double with the bases loaded to plate Aguilar and Burdick, who had reached by on a hit by pitch and a walk.
Husky starting pitcher Taran Alvelo (31-6), threw her third complete game of weekend to improve to 3-0 at the Seattle Regional, including a no-hitter vs. Montana. The sophomore struck out three batters with no walks as only four Wolverines reached base in the final.
Michigan took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo homer from the Faith Canfield.
Washington, who was the visiting team in the regional finale, pushed two runs across in the third inning to take the lead. Burdick hit a triple to the fence and was quickly sent home when Aguilar pounded a two-run home run to right-center.
Michigan tied it up in the fourth on an RBI double from Aidan Falk.
