ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –The University of Washington women's golf team 2016-17 season came to a close Wednesday afternoon as the 10th-seeded Huskies finished eighth at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional with a 27-over 891 (295-292-304).
Washington needed to finish in the top six in order to advance and just missed by three strokes. The Huskies entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed and spent the majority of the three rounds in the top six before the final holes of the third round played out. UW will finish its season with two team titles and 10 top 10 finishes with a lineup that featured three sophomores and two freshmen.
"I'm really proud of this team and the resiliency that they have shown this year," said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "For them to come this far after the fall that we had just shows that there's a lot to look forward to and be excited about for next season. Today wasn't our best round but they still fought and it was a good experience for our freshmen to have, being able to see the pressure and what it takes to advance out of regionals. It wasn't the ending we wanted, but there are positives that we will take away from this week."
Washington was led by sophomore Wenyung Keh who saved her best round for last as she went even par to climb 16 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 14th. She finished with an overall score of 4-over 220 (73-75-72). After making the turn at even par thanks to two birdies and two bogeys, the sophomore parred the next nine including a beautiful up and down shot on the par-3 11th that saved her perfect back nine. It marked her sixth top 25 effort of the season and the 14th of her career.
Sophomore Julianne Alvarez also finished in the top 25 as she finished tied for 18th with a 5-over 221 (72-69-80). Despite having a tough final round, Alvarez finished with a birdie on 18 en route to her seventh top-25 showing in 12 events this year. Following her was sophomore Sarah Rhee who finished tied for 38th with a 10-over 226 (72-76-78).
Freshman Karen Miyamoto continued to improve as the three-round tournament advanced as she lowered her score every day culminating in a 3-over 75 during Wednesday's final round. She climbed eight spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for 62nd. Her round featured two birdies including one on the par-3 11th hole where her tee shot landed five feet from the pin, letting her easily knock it in for birdie.
Rounding out the UW crew was freshman Ellen Takada, who placed tied for 83rd with a 7-over 236 (85-72, 79). Takada opened and closed the day with birdies on both the first and 18th holes, each of which were par-5s.
Teams earning bids out of the Albuquerque regional were No. 1 Stanford, No. 9 Duke, No. 36 Pepperdine, No. 6 USC, No. 26 California and No. 16 Miami.
