April 08, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE – After heavy rain Friday night force halted the opening game of the series, the No. 10 Washington Huskies split their first two games against Oregon State on Saturday. Washington (28-9, 5-6 Pac-12) won the series opener, 4-3, and dropped the second game, 2-1.
The Huskies had 11 hits on the day, led by Ali Aguilar with two hits including a solo home run in the second game to give the Huskies their only run of the game.
The teams played two innings on Friday in between rain delays. Oregon State got things started early in the first inning with two runs off a two-RBI single.
The Beavers' lead did not last long as the Huskies got on the board with a pair of runs in the first and second innings. Lead-off hitter Aguilar was issued a walk and advanced to third after Casey Stangel doubled down the left field line. Morganne Flores hit a sacrifice fly to plate Aguilar and bring in the Huskies' first run.
In the second inning Trysten Melhart was walked. Designated player Maggie Gallagher hit an infield single advancing Melhart to second. Kelly Burdick was issued a walk to load the bases. After a 20-minute rain delay, Stangel walked with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run for the Purple and Gold.
After the rain returned for over an hour, the coaches and officials decided to halt the game until Saturday.
Washington and Oregon State resumed play in the third inning and Kirstyn Thomas picked things up by reaching second on a throwing error by OSU's shortstop. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, followed by a Melhart single to plate Thomas and give the Huskies their first lead of the game, 3-2.
The Huskies' fourth and final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning after Flores singled and advanced to second off a walk tossed to Taylor Van Zee. Bates followed up with a single to extend their lead to 4-2.
Oregon State's Sammi Noland hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh, but the Husky defense prevented from them from bringing in the tying run and took the win.
Madi Schreyer started in the circle for Washington and earned her seventh win of the season after striking out three in 6.2 innings.
In the second game, Oregon State took the lead in the first inning once again, this time off an RBI-single.
They tacked on a second run in the fifth inning off another RBI-single to extend their lead to 2-0.
Aguilar blasted a solo home-run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Oregon State starter and winning pitcher, Taylor Cotton (7-4), to get the Huskies on the board.
Unfortunately, the Huskies were unable to bring in another run and Oregon State took the win, 2-1.
