SEATTLE – No. 10 Washington (29-9, 6-6 Pac-12) claimed the series against Oregon State (19-17, 2-7 Pac-12) Sunday night at Husky Softball Stadium after a 10-8 win and a series win. Seniors Casey Stangel and Ali Aguilar once again led the team at the plate combining for five hits and five RBIs.
Stangel and Morganne Flores earned their ninth home runs of the season with a pair of back-to-back bombs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Three pitchers toed the rubber for the Purple and Gold, starter Samantha Manti, Madi Schreyer and Taran Alvelo. It was Alvelo who earned the win, her 17th of the season. The Husky pitching staff combined for four strikeouts and four walks on the night.
Washington's offense got started in the first inning with lead-off hitter Aguilar drawing a walk. Sis Bates singled, advancing Aguilar to second. Stangel singled up the middle and plated Aguilar to give Washington its first of four runs for the inning. Taylor Van Zee followed suit with another RBI single, sending Bates home from second. Designated player, Julia DePonte, hit a double deep to centerfield off OSU starter Nerissa Eason, giving the Huskies their final two runs of the inning and a 4-0 lead.
Oregon State managed to get one run in the second inning on an error, but the Huskies added one more run in the bottom of the frame after Aguilar led off with a double and scored on another Stangel RBI single.
The sticks became hot in the third inning as both teams scored three runs apiece. The Beavers' Alysha Everett hit a three-run homer to cut the Huskies lead to 5-4.
The Huskies extended their lead back to four runs in their half of the third. Kirstyn Thomas walked and was sent home after an RBI from kaija Gibson. Aguilar hit a ground-rule double to centerfield, bringing home Trysten Melhart and DePonte, who previously singled and reached on fielder's choice, respectively.
Oregon State's offense showed grit and fought back in the fourth inning, tying the game after scoring four runs. Schreyer gave up an RBI single and was relieved by Alvelo OSU, who walked the bases loaded to bring in a second run and a two-RBI single brought in the Beavers' final two runs of the game.
Washington's first two batters in the fourth, Stangel and Flores, hit back-to-back homers to give the Huskies the lead once again. Their runs were enough to win the night as the teams finished at 10-8, Huskies.
