Huskies Knock Off Arizona, Finish Third At Pac-12s
April 28, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Washington beach volleyball climbed one more rung up the Pac-12 ladder today, upsetting third-seeded and eighth-ranked Arizona for its fourth win in a row at the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships. But the Huskies then had their outstanding run ended by No. 1-ranked USC in a winner-to-the-final, loser-out match. Washington (11-7) finished third in the Pac-12 after coming in as the No. 7 seed.
The Dawgs came into the Pac-12 tourney, hosted by Arizona, with 12 matches played all season. They proceeded to grind through six matches in two days, upsetting higher-seeded squads in No. 6 Cal and No. 4 Arizona State last night, and then started today's play with a 4-1 upset of No. 3 Arizona for UW's first win against the Wildcats in the sand. USC snapped Washington's four-match win streak with a 5-0 victory, and the Trojans then defeated UCLA to win the Pac-12 title.
This is the second year in a row the Huskies have outperformed their seeding at the Pac-12 tourney. Last year UW was No. 7 and finished fourth.
"It was an awesome, exhausting journey that happened really fast," said Head Coach Jonathan Winder. "To play that many matches in a span of 24 hours pushed the kids beyond their limits. It was neat to see their skills grow as we played one third of our season in 24 hours. They had to rally and play for one another and become great teammates.
After playing four matches, more than any other team in the tourney, over nearly 12 hours on Thursday, the Huskies still came up with their biggest win of the season this morning. "Being able to rebound and focus on the match against Arizona was really impressive," said Winder. "We probably played our best match of the year, regardless of how they felt with fatigue, against a really good Arizona team at home.
The Dawgs then had less than 30 minutes before taking on USC, which rested up while UW and Arizona played. The Trojans were stinging from their first loss of the year earlier in the morning to UCLA, and had also played two fewer matches than the Huskies to that point.
"Against USC we were just out of gas. Coming right off the Arizona match, the girls spent a lot of physical and emotional energy to get to that point, and USC had just come off a loss and they were very motivated and executed well."
Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye, Washington's No. 2 duo, was named to the All-Tournament Team, as they went 4-2 this weekend. Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray were also 4-2 at the No. 1 spot, as were Melanie Wade and Shayne McPherson at No. 4. Carly DeHoog and Cassie Strickland were 3-3 at No. 3, and Anna Crabtree and Lindsay Chalmers finished 3-3 at No. 5.
After the team tournament concluded, the Pairs Championship got underway. Jones and Scambray, the overall No. 4 seeds, advanced into the quarterfinals with a 21-11, 21-16 win over Stanford's team of Ivana Vanjak and Payton Chang. Schwan teamed with Strickland for the pairs tourney, but they fell to the fifth-seeded Arizona team of Madison and McKenna Witt, 21-11, 21-14.
Jones and Scambray will play the Witts in the quarterfinals Saturday at 9 a.m. and Winder said they'll still have something left in the tank. "They love playing beach volleyball and if they could play all day, every day they would. They'll play the Witt twins for a third time this season and it will definitely be a difficult challenge since it could potentially be the last home match for the Witts. So they will be in for a battle and have to continue their good play."
Match 1 vs. (3) Arizona
In a rematch from last season's contender's bracket quarterfinal, the Huskies quickly showed they weren't just happy to be back in the final four. Washington won four of the five first sets to put the home team on the ropes, and UW did not let up from there. The Dawgs rolled to the 4-1 victory, showing how far they'd come since a 2-3 loss to Arizona in the second week of their season.
Washington's first point came from Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray, who picked up their second win this season against Arizona's Witt twins, who were AVCA All-Americans last year. Jones and Scambray came out hot, taking an 8-2 lead in set one, and withstanding a late Witt rally to take it 21-19. They took care of business in the second set, 21-15.
At the No. 3 spot, Carly DeHoog and Cassie Strickland earned one of their biggest wins together, taking down Hailey Devlin and Sam Manley, 21-19, 21-18, to put the Dawgs ahead, 2-1.
Attention then shifted over to the No. 2 match, where Schwan and Julye were up a set but locked in a long second set battle with Olivia Macdonald and Olivia Hallaran. Arizona staved off a couple Husky match points, but UW got a transition chance at 24-23, and Schwan hammered one crosscourt from the left and down to end it, 25-23, and clinch the overall victory.
Melanie Wade and Shayne McPherson then added one more to the win column, as they put away a 21-16, 21-19 win at the No. 4 spot against the Burling/Mason tandem. Arizona's point came at No. 5, as Anna Crabtree and Lindsay Chalmers had their three-match win streak snapped, 21-10, 21-14, by Anselmo/Amaro.
Match 2 vs. (1) USC
The Dawgs went up against top-ranked USC for the second time this season, after a 1-4 loss to the Trojans in UW's second match of the season earlier this month. The Trojans had just suffered their first loss of the year in the main draw semifinals against UCLA, but the Huskies weren't able to make it two losses in a row for the defending NCAA Champions.
Washington hung close in most of the sets, but was unable to get on the board for the first time this season. Jones and Scambray went up against the consensus No. 1 duo in the country Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes, for the first time in their career. The first set was tied late, but the Trojans grabbed the last few points to win, 21-17, and they would take the second set, 21-15, for the win.
At No. 2, Schwan and Julye played two hardfought sets against Bukovec/Wheeler and were aiming to extend things to a third set, closing to within 19-20, but the Dawgs missed a serve long to give the Trojans the 21-18, 21-19 win.
USC's Terese Cannon and Nicolette Martin scored a 21-13, 21-14 win at No. 3 over Strickland and DeHoog. At No. 4, McPherson and Wade fought off three match points, including a big block from Wade who posted hundreds of those over her past five years as a Dawg indoors and on the sand, but USC converted its last chance to secure the 21-12, 21-19 win. Crabtree and Chalmers fell at the No. 5 spot to Belton/Kremer, 21-18, 21-11.
