Dawgs Pushed But Still Sweep Broncos At Alki
April 23, 2017 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE - The Washington women's beach volleyball team went undefeated on the weekend at home, sweeping Boise State 5-0 at Alki Beach. The Huskies played through the constant rain to win their last regular season match to finish the regular season 7-5.
"It was a little wet today and the girls played hard, everybody was really solid," said head coach Jonathan Winder. "All five pairs did a really good job and had a lot of good energy."
To start the day, the Huskies earned wins in both the No. 4 and No. 5 matches. Melanie Wade and Shayne McPherson defeated BSU's Bulda/Hayes at the No. 4 spot in the only two-set match of the day, 21-16, 21-8. The duo scored nine straight points to come back from being down 12-16 in the first set and used that momentum to take set two handily. Anna Crabtree and Lindsay Chalmers used strong serving in the third set to earn a win at No. 5, 21-11, 20-22, 15-5 against Jensen Allen and Maddie Simon.
Washington continued to play in close matches, winning in three-sets at No. 2 and No 3. Junior Courtney Schwan and sophomore Destiny Julye battled tough serving from Boise State's O'Donnell/Osburn at the No. 2 spot in all three sets. The Dawgs won a close first set 21-19, before losing the second set 21-16. They took the first few points in the third set and never lost the lead, winning 15-11 to clinch the overall match win at 3-0.
At the No. 3 spot, Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog dropped the first set 12-21 to Emily Sullivan and Janell Walley, but bounced back with a 21-17 victory to force a third set. The Dawgs then jumped out to a 7-2 lead with convincing kills from both and took set three 15-10.
"I think for us, the more we play, the more comfortable we get," said Winder. "So the third sets give us a few more opportunities to learn as well as just to get a little more consistent."
Finishing the day, Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones gave the Huskies their final win of the match at the No. 1 spot. After losing the first set to Sierra Nobley and Sabryn Roberts, Scambray and Jones turned it around with a 21-15 win in the second. The pair used great defense, including a block from Jones to finish the third set 15-8. Jones and Scambray finish the regular season at 10-1.
In the exhibition match, Crabtree and Chalmers also picked up their second victory of the day.
The Huskies have a short week before they travel to Tucson, Arizona for the Pac-12 Championships starting Thursday, April 27.
