SEATTLE - The indoor track season crowns its champions this Friday and Saturday in College Station, Texas, and four Huskies are prepared to give chase for the podium at the Gilliam Indoor facility. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be hosted by Texas A&M and streamed live online by ESPN. Washington will be well represented in the indoor finale by senior Elizabeth Quick, juniors Amy-Eloise Neale and Colby Gilbert, and sophomore Chase Smith.
Only the top sixteen individuals nationally in each event are in the mix for NCAA titles. The top eight placers in each event score team points and earn First Team All-America honors, with 9-16 places garnering Second Team All-America. Gilbert is appearing in a third-straight NCAA Indoor meet, while Quick is making her second-straight appearance. Smith and Neale are making their NCAA Indoor debuts, however Neale was an NCAA Outdoor finalist last year.
First up for the Huskies on Friday will be Amy-Eloise Neale in the semifinal of the women's mile at 3:30 p.m. Neale, competing in her first NCAA Indoor Championships, made the finals in the NCAA 1,500-meters last outdoor season, then carried that into a brilliant cross country season where she won the Pac-12 title and took eighth at NCAAs. Now she will aim for a podium spot in the mile, where she comes in seeded 8th overall. Neale ran a PR of 4:34.15 at the Husky Classic, the second-fastest time in Washington history.
Looking to add to Washington's legacy in the men's pole vault is sophomore Chase Smith, making his NCAA debut on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific. Smith, a Montana native, has been enjoying a breakout second season with assistant coach Pat Licari, setting a new PR on four different occasions. He went 17-3 at the UW Invitational, then 17-4 1/2 at the Husky Classic. A big make of 17-11 in a meet at Air Force was followed by a make of 17-11 1/4 at the MPSF Championships to win that title. Washington has had a men's pole vault entry at NCAA Indoors in seven of the past eight years, with Jax Thoirs winning the NCAA title last year in his final appearance.
Friday at 6:20 p.m. Pacific, Colby Gilbert will go in the first of his two long distance brawls this week. The 5,000-meters will be first, with Gilbert planning to double back and race in the 3,000-meters on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Gilbert is the No. 2 overall seed in the 5k with his school record time of 13:34.85. In Saturday's 3k, Gilbert has the fastest time in the NCAA this season with another school record of 7:45.71, however Oregon's Edward Cheserek will go in as the big favorite with Gilbert and the rest of the field looking to score the upset. Last season at NCAA Indoors, Gilbert was 8th in the 3k, and ran on the DMR which finished second-place, and he also ran in the 3k as a redshirt freshman in 2015, placing 13th.
Senior Elizabeth Quick closes out her indoor career in the women's pole vault on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Quick was ninth at NCAA Indoors a year ago and then tied for 11th at NCAA Outdoors so she will be jumping for her first place on an NCAA podium. The 2016 Pac-12 Champion added the MPSF title to her trophy case this year, winning a jump-off with a make of 14-0, a season's-best. Quick is tied for 10th nationally coming into the meet.
