Thomas Blasts Second Home Run Of The Weekend, Huskies Beat Fresno State 5-1

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Washington Huskies scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat Fresno State, 5-1, Saturday afternoon and improved to 3-0 at the Judi Garman Classic.
The Huskies continued their five game streak of putting a run on the board in the first inning and extended their lead to 5-1 after a three-run home run from Kirstyn Thomas in the top of the seventh inning.
Eight Huskies had at least one hit and the team totaled for 12 on the night. Freshman Sis Bates went 3-for-4 and knocked a single in the final inning to get on base before Thomas' blasted it out of the park.
Taran Alvelo earned her ninth straight win for the season. In seven innings the RHP tossed nine strikeouts and only gave up one hit.
Washington got the game going right away after a pop-up from Taylor Van Zee plated Trysten Melhart to get on the board, 1-0.
The Purple and Gold earned a second run the following inning off an RBI double from Melhart that sent Amirah Milloy home from third.
The Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the second after a solo home run from Savannah McHellon. The home run marked the only hit for Bulldogs in the game.
Headed into the final inning, the teams were separated by just one run at 2-1, Huskies. Pinch runner Alyssa Simons was on first base for Morganne Flores and Sis Bates was on second with one out. Thomas pounded the ball just shy of foul territory for a three-run home run to cruise past Fresno State, 5-1.
The Huskies return to action for their second game of the day on March 3 at 5 p.m. against Baylor. They will conclude their time at the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday, March 5 against Northwestern. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at the Anderson Family Field at Cal State Fullerton.
