TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Washington men's golf team surged four spots to finish in a tie for fourth place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz on Sunday (March 19). The Huskies finished with a team score of 6-under 846 overall at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
Washington tied with Nevada for fourth place in the 16 team field. Arizona State claimed the team championship with a 54-hole 41-under par 811.
"We didn't play close to our potential so it was a disappointing weekend for us," head coach Alan Murray said. "You can't fault our guys' effort and attitudes this week. We just had a really off week which happens in this sport. We will continue to work on the things we need to improve and get ready for what's next."
Sophomore Carl Yuan paced the Huskies, finishing in a tie for 12th place after shooting a 4-under 67 for the second consecutive round on the final day of action. Yuan carded six birdies on the day to lead the Huskies.
Junior Frank Garber, who started the day in a tie for 85th place, moved into a tie for 27th after carding a 3-under 68 for the second straight round. Senior Kevin Kwon also tied for 27th, shooting a 3-over 74.
Senior Corey Pereira tied for 52nd after a 6-over 77 final score and freshman Daniel List finished in a tie for 57th, shooting 5-over 76.
"This tournament doesn't define us and we talked about how we had a pretty intense last couple of months with the addition of finals," Murray said. "It's important for our guys to get some rest and take a little time to recharge the batteries before we head to Stanford."
Next up, the Huskies head to Stanford, Calif. for The Goodwin on March 30-April 1.
