March 30, 2017 | Men's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. -- Senior Corey Pereira leads the field as the University of Washington men's golf team sits in second place after the opening round of The Goodwin at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. As a team, the Huskies finished the day at 3-over-par 283.
"I'm really pleased with how our team handled themselves today," said head coach Alan Murray. "They showed a lot of heart and grit which is always encouraging to see as a coach. This course and event is a really great test for us and we are excited for next two days of competition."
Washington shot 3-over 283 on the day and are seven strokes back of host Stanford who leads the field at 4-under 276. The Huskies are joined by Southern Methodist (+4), USC (+5) and BYU (+8) to round out the top 5. The 24-field team includes five ranked programs.
Pereira pushed his way atop the leaderboard behind a 4-under 66 in the opening round. The senior leads the field with seven birdies and an eagle.
"Corey had one of the best rounds of the year with a lot of great shots," said Murray. "He hit a bit of a rough patch in the middle of the round but he bounced back like a champ and really showed his class as a player."
Junior Frank Garber fired a 1-under 69 and is tied for sixth overall, carding four birdies on the day.
Sophomore Carl Yuan and senior Kevin Kwon each tallied 4-over 74 on the day to finish tied for 47th, while freshman Henry Lee is tied for 81st, shooting a 6-over 76.
