March 10, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE – No. 8 Washington picked up its second win of the day after rolling past Penn State, 15-0, in the Huskies' second game of the opening day of the Husky Classic.
Before their five-inning rout of the Nittany Lions, the Huskies snapped No. 7 Minnesota's 19-game win streak with a 3-2 win as Washington head coach Heather Tarr captured her 500th career win.
Against Penn State, the team collected 12 hits from seven different batters, including three each from Morganne Flores and Sis Bates. Flores, whose sixth-inning home run broke a 2-2 tie in the win over Minnesota, homered twice in the Penn State game, while Bates and Ali Aguilar knocked one homer apiece.
Freshman Samantha Manti (4-0) went the distance for the Purple and Gold, recording four strikeouts and giving up only two hits for the win.
In the first, Taylor Van Zee reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Stangel walk. A triple from Bates sent the two runners home to snag an early 2-0 lead. Flores followed up with a two-run home run to finish the inning with the Huskies ahead, 4-0.
In the third inning, the Huskies batted around, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. DePonte walked and advanced to second on a bunt single from Bates. A Flores single plated DePonte and double from Rachel Ogasawara brought in Flores to make the score 6-0.
With two outs in the third and bases loaded, Aguilar hit a grand slam deep to right field and the Huskies ended the inning 11-0.
Washington tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 15-0. Kirstyn Thomas hit an RBI double followed by a two-run homer from Flores, her second of the night.
The Husky Classic continues on Saturday as the Huskies when they take on South Dakota at 2:45 p.m. at Husky Softball Field, followed by a Washington and Minnesota rematch at 5 p.m.
