Huskies Roll Past No. 25 Arizona With Season-High 197.175
February 20, 2017 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – The Washington women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 197.175 against No. 25 Arizona Sunday afternoon in Alaska Airlines Arena. The 197.175 marks the first time the GymDawgs have scored above a 197 since 2004. The season-high score is 8th all-time in program history.
"We have 197's written all over the gym, we talk about it a lot: what it feels like, what it takes to earn it," said head coach Elise Ray. "We encourage the team that it takes practicing like a 197 team to earn 197 in competition. What we saw yesterday in competition is what we've been seeing in the gym. The team has raised their standards and expectations of themselves. We are so excited, but also still hungry."
The GymDawgs swept all four events, scoring a season-high on bars (49.275), beam (49.425), and floor (49.400). In total, the Huskies had ten top-3 finishers on the day with individual titles on three of the four events.
Junior Hailey Burleson was on fire all afternoon long, scoring a career-high 39.575 in the all-around and placing first on vault, beam, and floor. Her 9.875 on vault, 9.925 on beam, and 9.95 on floor were all season highs, while her beam and floor scores were both career-highs.
Freshman Maya Washington placed tied for second and posted career-highs 9.9s on both bars and floor.
"After each meet, with each individual, we celebrate what's been accomplished and then talk about what can be done better," added Ray. "Every week the bar is raised for each individual, encouraging them to train with the intention of reaching their next personal goal. This team is so motivated to work and get better for each other and the betterment of the team."
Arizona finished the meet with a score of 195.425.
