Washington Shuts Out CSUN

SAN DIEGO, Calif. β Last minute schedule changes did not slow down the No. 8 Huskies Friday night as they shut out the Cal State Northridge Matadors (1-6), 8-0. With Taran Alvelo (5-0) in the circle, the Huskies (7-1) earned their sixth straight win of the season.
Casey Stangel hit her second home run in two days after blasting it out of the park for a two run home run in the top of the first inning. Ali Aguilar (2-for-3) was brought in on the home run after being walked.
The Matadors' starting pitcher Chyanne NoliΒ walked three Huskies in the first inning and was relieved by Rebecca Bell.
In the second inning with two in scoring position, Stangel grounded outl andΒ allowed Kelly Burdick (2-for-3) to cross the plate, making the score 3-0. One more run was brought in off a double from Taylor Van Zee (2-for-3). The teams entered the third inning at 4-0, Huskies.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Sis Bates (3-for3) hit her second home run of the weekend, her second of her collegiate career. Bates' single home run gave the Huskies a 5-0 lead.
At her final appearance at the plate for the night, Kirstyn Thomas helped induce an offensive explosion beginning with an RBI bringing in Taylor Van Zee. Aguilar then stepped up to the plate with bases loaded. She hit a single that brought in Thomas and Bates. The Huskies finished the inning ahead, 8-0.
Defensively, DePonte and Morganne Flores led the team with seven and eight putouts, respectively.
Alvelo struck out eight batters in the seven innings and walked only one.
The Huskies will resume play next Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. in the first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex. The team will also face Missouri, Northwestern, Texas and UC Santa Barbara in the tournament. The Classic will begin Friday, Feb. 24 and end Sunday, Feb. 26.
