February 16, 2017 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 8 University of Washington Huskies (5-1) defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders (1-6) 14-1 Thursday night in the first game of the Campbell/Cartier Classic.
The Huskies had four home runs in the ball game, including one from freshman Sis Bates', the first of her career. The Dawgs put at least two runs on the board in every inning during the first game of the Huskies' doubleheader.
The Huskies showed their dominance over UC Riverside after scoring six runs, five before the first out of the game. After allowing five runs, the Highlanders made a pitching change replacing RHP Jacy Boles with RHP Taylor Misfeldt.
Right out the gate, the Dawgs took the lead after an RBI from Casey Stangel hit an RBI single that brought runner Ali Aguilar (2-for-3) home from third. Julia DePonte and Taylor Van Zee (2-for-2) were walked, loading the bases. Trysten Melhart brought in two after a fielding error. The Huskies' next batter, Sis Bates (3-for-3), tripled to bring in two more runs for the Huskies, making it 5-0. The last run of the inning came from Kelly Burdick with a sacrifice bunt that brought in Bates, extending the lead to 6-0.
Washington pushed two more runs across after RBI's from Melhart and Bates. Van Zee doubled and was brought in off a double from Melhart. Melhart crossed home after Bates singled to make the score 8-0, Huskies.
Going into the bottom of the second inning, the teams had to take a 21 minute intermission after a power outage at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The delay didn't slow down the Huskies' momentum when Aguilar and Stangel hit back-to-back home runs to put the Huskies at 10-0.
Following the two home runs, UC Riverside inserted their third pitcher of the night, subbing in Rebecca Faulkner for Misfeldt.
With two outs in the fourth inning, the offense continued to shine. Bates scored her first home run of her career and Flores scored her first home run of the season. The Huskies ended the top of the frame ahead, 12-0.
The Highlanders put themselves on the board after an RBI from Brittney Garcia. At the end of the fourth inning the Huskies led, 12-1.
The final inning of the game brought in two runs for the Huskies after Rachel Ogasawara got her first knock of the season that brought in freshman Maggie Gallagher. The second run came from a sacrifice fly from freshman Alyssa Simons, earning her first RBI wearing the Purple and Gold, making the score 14-1.
RHP Madi Schreyer improved to 2-1 on the season. The junior pitched four innings allowing only four hits. Junior RHP Kristin Cochran came in as relief in the fifth inning.
Bates had three hits and four RBI's in the game. She was a double short of hitting for the cycle after hitting a single, triple and home run.
