Huskies Rally Late To Defeat SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In their second game of the day, the No. 8 Washington Husky Softball team (6-1) rallied in the seventh inning to beat SDSU (3-4), 6-5. The Huskies trailed the Aztecs by two runs going into the final inning of the night, but a home run by Morganne Flores and two RBI's put the Huskies ahead. Taran Alvelo delivered two strikeouts and induced a pop fly into the infield to end the game.
After a slow first three innings with only one hit per team, Julia DePonte got the ball rolling with a two run homerun that brought in runner Casey Stangel from first base. The final run of the inning was a sacrifice hit from Sis Bates that allowed Taylor Van Zee to score from third. The Huskies ended the top of the fourth inning ahead, 3-0.
The Aztecs put a run on the board in the bottom of the frame with an RBI from Taylor Stewart, bringing in Kristen Parker.
SDSU took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning after a three run homerun from Jenavee Perez made the score 4-3, SDSU.
Another home run for the Aztecs from Katie Byrd extended their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
After going into the seventh inning trailing the Aztecs, Morganne Flores hit her second home run of the day to make it a one-run ballgame at 5-4. The rallying Huskies did not let up; with one out and bases loaded, Stangel brought in the tying run with Thomas from third. DePonte followed suit with a single RBI bringing in Burdick to give the Huskies the lead once again, 6-5.
Alvelo made her fourth appearance of 2017 in the circle and improved to 4-0 on the season. The sophomore delivered struck out 11 batters and finished the seven innings with zero walks.
Due to an inclement weather forecast for California, the remainder of the Campbell/Cartier Classic has been canceled. Instead, the Huskies will travel to Palm Springs Friday, Feb. 17 to face California State University Northridge at 5:30 p.m. at the Big League Dreams Sports Complex.
