Singles Lead The Way For UW In 6-1 Win

MORAGA, Calif. – The Washington women's tennis team got back to their winning ways today, picking up a 6-1 win at Saint Mary's at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
"Winning today was a great result for us," said Prokopuik. "It definitely came down to which team had the most court presence in the end, especially since we came out a little slow in doubles."
The Gaels came out tough against the Dawgs in doubles, defeating Stacey Fung and Miki Kobayashi on court one 6-1, and Nour Abbes and Katarina Kopcalic 6-3. With the host clinching the doubles points, court three's match went unfinished.
After walking into singles with a 1-0 deficit the Huskies wasted no time bouncing back in singles, winning the first sets on all six courts. Earning her first ITA singles ranking as a Husky this past week, Alexis Prokopuik closed out her match quickly on court four, defeating Kareena Manji 6-3, 6-4 to even the match. On court one, Fung gave UW a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jana McCord.
Against Clementine Clement, Abbes was able to rebound after a tough second set which she surrendered 6-1, with a 6-1 win of her own in the third to put UW up 3-1. For the third time this season, Kenadi Hance clinched the win for the Huskies with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court four, picking up her eighth singles win in a dual match this year. On court three, Kobayashi defeated Danielle McIntyre 6-3, 6-4 with Kopcalic finishing shortly after on court six, battling out a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win to bring the final score to 6-1.
"I'm proud of the girls for firing ourselves up and bouncing back with the competitive attitude that we do and know so well," said Prokopuik. "We fought hard down the line and are ready to roll into tomorrow's match against San Diego State."
Washington will remain in Moraga, Calif. for tomorrow's match against San Diego State, taking on the Aztecs at 11 a.m.
