February 01, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – For the second consecutive year the Washington women's tennis team has begun their season at 6-0, and will take their undefeated record on the road this coming weekend to face TCU on Friday February 3rd at noon and Baylor on Sunday February 5th at 10 a.m.
"We're excited for another weekend with the team to improve and build from the last month," said assistant coach Denise Dy. "We are looking forward to have another chance to compete against two great teams on the road."
The Huskies played in their home opener last weekend when they hosted Portland and Seattle for a doubleheader on Saturday January 28th. UW picked up two 6-1 wins that day, with four players earning four total wins between each match. Stacey Fung picked up two doubles wins paired with Kenadi Hance, and grabbed two wins in singles on court one to earn her team-leading 12th win on the year. After beginning last year's dual match season winning nine straight matches in singles before taking a loss, Hance has begun her sophomore campaign at 6-0. The Dawgs will look to continue their early success in their non-conference schedule this weekend with two matches in the state of Texas.
TCU has begun the 2017 season with a 3-1 record, earning wins over UTEP, Abilene Christian and Wichita State before falling to No. 5 Oklahoma State this past weekend. The Frogs own three ITA rankings, including No. 75 Seda Arantekin and No. 115 Marie Norris in singles, and No. 16 Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas in doubles. The Huskies faced off against TCU earlier this season at the David Kent Invitational, where they went 3-0 against them in doubles during the first day of competition and 4-2 in singles during days two and three. They are led by head coach Lee Taylor Walker, who is in his third season with the team after spending seven seasons as the head coach in Memphis.
Led by director of women's tennis Joey Scrivano in his 15th season, Baylor has begun the year 2-0 with wins over Texas Rio Grande Valley and McNeese State. They're top player on the court is senior Blair Shankle, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the country by the ITA in singles, and No. 15 in doubles paired with Elizabeth Profit. Washington leads the all-time series with the Bears 2-1 after their upset in Waco, Texas last season, defeating then-ranked No. 15 Baylor 4-3.
