Dawgs Take First Loss Of The Season At TCU
February 03, 2017 | Women's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – In their seventh match of the season and fifth on the road, the Washington women's tennis team took their first loss 4-0 against TCU today at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"Today was a battle between two very good teams down to the last point," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "I thought we came out a little bit too flat in doubles and the first 30 minutes of singles, but once we settled in we were able to battle back into the match and give ourselves a chance to win."
The Frogs took early leads on all courts in doubles to begin the day, up 1-2 on all three courts. While the Huskies would battle back on court three, TCU grabbed wins on courts one and two with 6-2 victories by 16th ranked Olaya Garrido-Rivas and Donika Bashota, and Carolins Wegner and Seda Arantekin.
Down 0-1, the Dawgs were able to take first set wins on only two courts, but bounced back to force third sets in three of the matches. Court two was the first to finish, with TCU taking a 2-0 lead as No. 75 Arantekin defeated Nour Abbes in a tough three-set battle.
On court five, Kenadi Hance nearly took the first set but lost the tie-break 7-5, before falling in the second set 7-5. The Frogs clinched the match on court six, where freshman Katarina Kopcalic forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second, but dropped the third to Wegner 6-3.
"I told them after the match that I almost felt like we ran out of time today," said Stephenson. "I think if we could have held on just a little bit longer on a couple of courts we could have won this match."
The remaining courts went unfinished, including Stacey Fung and Bashota's second matchup this season and third of Fung's career at UW. Washington owned the lead in the third sets on all three remaining courts.
"We are disappointed with the outcome but we have so much to look forward to this season and this group is so much fun to coach," said Stephenson. "We are competing at a high level and will clean up a couple of things for our match on Sunday against Baylor."
The Dawgs will remain in the Lone Star State and head to Waco, Texas to face Baylor on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT. The Huskies upset Baylor on the road last season with a 4-3 win over the then-ranked 15th team in the country.
