November 05, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ROLLING HILLS ESTATE, Calif. – Freshman Vanessa Wong defeated the No. 5 seed in five sets to win the Jack Kramer Club Invitational singles championship on Sunday.
"I'm extremely proud of Vanessa for winning this event and the toughness she showed," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "She had some very tough back-to-back three-set matches and she stayed the course throughout the weekend. I was excited to see her hard work and commitment pay off."
In the finals, Wong faced Pac-12 foe Helen Altick from UCLA. Wong won the first set with a score of 6-4. However, Altick came back to take set two, 6-3. In the end, Wong came out the winner after winning the deciding set, 6-3.
"I'm so happy with the win," Wong said. "I got to play a lot of great players, and I was happy with the way I competed this past week. I have a lot of positives to take away and there are things that I'll have to work on for our spring season. Overall, it has been a great experience and start to my freshman year. I'm excited to work even harder for 2018!"
Wong represented Washington women's tennis in the finals. To get to the title match, she upset the No. 3 seed and the No. 1 seed. She also won three-straight three-set matches down the stretch.
The fall season is now done for the Huskies. They will get back into competition mode when the 2018 season begins in January.
"We are excited to get to work in the off season and prepare for 2018," Stephenson said. "The girls are motivated and committed to our goals, and our experiences this fall will definitely pay off."
