Huskies Open 2018 Season With Win Over Hawai'i
January 12, 2018 | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU – Washington women's tennis kicked off the 2018 season with a 5-2 win over Hawai'i on Friday at the UH Tennis Complex.
"We didn't have the start that we wanted to in doubles," Washington head coach Robin Stephenson said. "We came out flat and didn't play very well. Before the match, we talked a lot about how we were going to compete and respond to adversity and get back into our competitive mindset. After doubles, they responded the right way. They competed really well up and down the line and won a lot of close sets."
Washington (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) is undefeated in season openers under Stephenson. The Rainbow Warriors (0-1, 0-0 Big West) lost their season opener to the Dawgs for the second year in a row.
"Winning the first match of the season was huge for us," Stephenson said. "Hawai'i improved a lot from last year."
The Huskies won five of the six singles points after dropping the doubles point. Miki Kobayashi and No. 115 Vanessa Wong teamed up to win the lone match in doubles, 6-2.
That doubles pair also won their singles matches as well, earning the points in two sets. In the No. 2 singles, Kobayashi won 6-0, 7-6(4). Wong won her match 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles.
"I'm so proud of how the team did today," Wong said. "After losing a tough doubles point, every singles match started strong and we picked it up soon after. I also had a lot of fun getting my first win today. The girls helped me through it a lot, through the nerves, and I'm really happy with how I played today."
Playing at No. 1 singles, No. 6 Stacey Fung battled for her singles win. She won in two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Fellow junior Kenadi Hance also won in singles, taking down her opponent 7-6(4), 6-2. Senior Alexis Prokopuik came away victorious in singles as well, winning 6-7(5), 6-1.
Sophomore Katarina Kopcalic dropped her singles match, 6-2, 6-4.
The Huskies' next match will be their home opener against Texas Tech on Friday, January 19. The match will begin at 12 p.m. PT and will have live streaming and live stats links on GoHuskies.com.
