Carl Yuan Ranked No. 6 in Fall Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings
November 17, 2017 | Men's Golf
SEATTLE --- Washington junior Carl Yuan is ranked No. 6 in the Team International Men's standings for the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup which was announced on Thursday. The top six golfers from the final ranking in the spring from both the United States and International men and women—12 total golfers—shall be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer Cup July 6-8 at the Evian Resort Golf Club.
The 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup will be the first using the expanded format of United States men's and women's collegiate golfers versus their counterparts from around the world.
"The Palmer Cup is one of the best events of the college golf year and is a team that everyone really wants to make, both on the US side and the international side," said Washington Head Coach Alan Murray. "Many of the guys we see winning major championships and professional tournaments all over the world in the last couple of years have played in the Palmer Cup so it has a track record of having great players play in it. Making the team is a real honor for the student-athletes."
Yuan has been Washington's top golfer this season, posting a scoring average of 70.1 with five rounds below par including three rounds in the 60's and two Top 10 finishes through three events (8 rounds) this season. He recently returned from a third-place finish at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in New Zealand, his third top-20 finish in three appearances.
"Carl is without doubt one of the best players in college golf in my mind," said Murray. "I know that he would be excited and honored to be part of the very first international team at the Palmer Cup. The team selection is a long way off and he just needs to keep focusing on improving each day and playing his game which he does really well.
"I am sure making the team will be a goal of his but it cannot be his focus," Murray said. "His focus will be on his game and doing the things he needs to help lower his scores. I am excited to continue watching his development as a player and person and I hope to see him representing the international side next summer!"
Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The remaining six men's and women's spots for the United States will consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team will include the men's and women's winners of The R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches pick.
The UW men's golf team wrapped up its fall season last week with a solid showing at the Warrior Wave Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii, posting a 16-under 848 to finish tied for 10th. The Huskies return to action January 29-30, taking part in the Arizona Intercollegiate.
