October 31, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SAN FRANCISCO --- Washington goalkeeper Saif Kerawala has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 23-29 as announced by the conference office today.
Kerawala, a red-shirt sophomore from Bellevue, posted a pair of shutout victories in key Pac-12 contests for the Huskies last week, making four total saves in two matches.
On Thursday, he made just two saves, but both were key in Washington's 1-0 win at San Diego State. Kerawala made a sliding stop on a breakaway midway through the first half, then stopped a penalty kick at the end of the period. He also came off his line and intercepted a number of crosses in the second half to record the shutout.
Kerawala followed that performance with another crucial shutout as the Huskies earned a big three points with a 1-0 victory at UCLA. In that match, Kerawala made another pair of saves and picked up another cleansheet to give him seven on the season.
Kerawala has been strong in goal lately and has not allowed a goal in the last 239:03 in net. It's his longest shutout stretch of the year and second time he has gone at least 220 minutes without allowing a goal in 2017. He posted a streak of 228:36 scoreless minutes between Sept. 17 and Oct. 1. The sophomore currently ranks second in the conference in goals against average at 0.88 and is second in shutouts with seven.
This is the first weekly honor for Kerawala and the third for Washington this season (Joey Parish - Aug. 29 and Handwalla Bwana - Sept. 19).
The Huskies close out the regular season next week, traveling to Oregon State on Thursday, Nov. 9 for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
