Batta, Davis Advance In Main Draw After First Day At ITA Northwest Regionals

STOCKTON, Calif. – Two Huskies remain in the singles main draw after winning two matches on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regionals on Thursday.

Freshman Jack Davis and sophomore Amit Batta won their first two matches to advance to the round of 32 on Friday. Junior Enzo Sommer won his first match, but an injury prevented him from continuing in his second match.

Facing Can Kaya from California, Davis played an intense three-set match in the first round. He ended up winning 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4. He followed that win up with a win over Seattle U's Matt Alderson, 6-3, 7-5.

In his first action this fall, Batta started off strong with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Santa Clara's Vasileios Iliopoulos. The next round saw another victory for the sophomore, defeating Scott Paz from Eastern Washington.

Sommer picked up a gritty win in the first round, taking down Simon Homedes of Gonzaga in two sets, 7-6(0), 6-2. Unfortunately, he got injured in the second match, losing by default.

Kawika Lam and Piers Foley both lost close matches in the opening round, needing tiebreakers in one set each. Sebastian Hawken and Alexis Alvarez fell in the first round as well. All four Huskies will continue playing in the consolation bracket on Friday.

Due to Sommer's injury, Washington rearranged some of its doubles pairings. Instead of playing with Sommer, Lam will now compete with Foley. Additionaly, Alvarez and Hawken are paired together now.
