January 03, 2017 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. β Washington junior Henry Wingo signed with the Seattle Sounders ahead of the 2017 training camp, as announced by the Sounders FC Wednesday.
"We are delighted for Henry to sign with the Sounders," said Washington head coach Jamie Clark. "He gets to realize his childhood dream of playing for his hometown club, which is fantastic.Β He's worked very hard since arriving at UW to reach this level, and it will be fun of all UW fans to see him suit up as a Sounder next to former Husky teammate Cristian Roldan."
Wingo is a local product of the Sounders Academy where he played for 3Β years prior to attending the University of Washington. While with the club team he scored 12 goals for the U-18 team in two seasons. The Seattle native attended Shorecrest High School.
Wingo's signing is a result of the MLS increasing roster size in 2017 specifically for homegrown players. He is joined by Seyi Adekoya of UCLA. The pair will be the eighth and ninth players to be signed as Sounders Homegrown Players in four years.
"As an educator, I'm delighted that Henry (Wingo) has worked so hard at both growing as a soccer player and toward earning his degree," said Clark. "He is now in touching distance of completing his education, and I know it's a priority of his to be a UW graduate.Β He was hounded to sign last year, and I'm happy Henry (Wingo) was mature enough to wait an additional year as it's helped him as a student, a soccer player and a person. He is now ready for the jump, and we're eager to see him in the Rave Green."Β
The junior played in 58 matches for the Purple and Gold and totaled for two goals and four assists. Β He was an effective wide and central midfielder. Wingo played and started in all but one match this season. Two of his four goals were game winning goals for the Huskies.
His accolades include NSCAA All-far West Region Third Team (2015), All-Pac-12 Second Team (2015), Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team (2015), NSCAA All-Far West Region First Team (2016), All-Pac-12 Second Team (2016) and Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention (2016).
