January 29, 2017 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – In their first time competing in front of a home crowd the GymDawgs posted their best meet score of the season, scoring a 196.300 against No. 4 Utah Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Huskies had five top-3 finishers on the day, recording a top-3 finish in each event.
"Our collective goal for our home opener was to put all four events together," said head coach Elise Ray. "We've been having success in individual areas but it was time to put it all together. I'm so proud of the team for competing with a Top 4 team, start to finish."
Three GymDawgs scored 9.9s Saturday afternoon, with two of them coming on beam and one on floor. Juniors Hailey Burleson and Joslyn Goings both put up 9.9s on beam, placing tied for second on the event overall. Sophomore Kristyn Hoffa tied for second on floor, scoring a career-high 9.9 with her stunning floor routine.
"We've been talking about excellence since day one of pre-season," said Ray. "What excellence looks like and feels like. It's so exciting to see the beginnings of the excellence I see in the gym, come out in competition.
The Huskies posted season-highs on both beam (49.250) and floor (49.200), while tying their season high on bars with a 48.925.
"Our floor performance last weekend was uncharacteristic for how we see the girls train, but an event like that is also a wake up call," added Ray. "It takes intention to compete like you train, so the floor team came back with a vengeance this week, wanting to prove what they're capable of.
Utah finished with a score of 197.175 to take first. Freshman MyKayla Skinner placed first in the all-around with a 39.375.
