UW Moves To 6-0 With Two Wins At Home
January 28, 2017 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – In their home-opener today the Washington women's tennis team grabbed two victories in a doubleheader beginning with a 6-1 win over Portland followed by a 6-1 win over Seattle at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"It was good to come out and play our first matches at home," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "I think the girls were a little nervous playing in the first match, but I thought they did a really good job of taking care of business."
To begin their day the Huskies took the doubles point against Portland with wins on courts two and three. Alexis Prokopuik and Katarina Kopcalic defeated Tatiana Grigoryan and Kara Okazaki on court three 6-0, with Stacey Fung and Kenadi Hance finishing up shortly after, defeating Radina Dimitrova and Emily Soares 6-2 on court two. Miki Kobayashi and Lana Slavica's match on court one went unfinished.
Playing in her first career dual match, Slavica was first to finish in singles against the Pilots, defeating Anna Oberg on court six 6-1, 6-1. On court one, Fung defeated Dimitrova 6-1, 6-1, with Kopcalic clinching the win for Washington on court five, defeating Emily Soares 6-3, 6-1.
"We came out strong in both singles and doubles and really focused on what we've been working on in practice this past week," said Fung. "It was a lot of fun playing at home in front of the crowd."
On court four, Hance extended UW's lead to 5-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win, while Prokopuik defeated Jelena Lazarevic 6-4, 6-3 for her 10th singles win on the year. On court two, Kobayashi dropped a tough first set, losing the tie-breaker 8-6 before falling 6-4 in the second, setting the score at 6-1 Washington over Portland.
In game two, courts two and three belonged to Washington yet again, with Hance and Fung finishing first on court two, followed by Kopcalic and Prokopuik on court three.
To begin singles Washington claimed five of the six first sets and powered their way to an early clinch. Kopcalic was first to finish her match on court five, defeating Audrey Scott 6-0, 6-0, with Prokopuik winning on court three 6-0, 6-0 as well. On courts two and four, Kobayashi and Hance finished almost simultaneously to clinch the win for UW, with Kobayashi giving the Dawgs their third 6-0, 6-0 shutout of the match.
On court six Lana Slavica fell to Caroline Maltby 6-4, 6-4 to bring the match to 5-1, but Fung closed out the match with a final point for UW, coming back in the second set from down 1-3 to win by a final score of 6-4, 6-3.
"I think our girls did a really good job, we tried some different doubles combinations and saw some good things in both singles and doubles today," said Stephenson. "We're 6-0 and happy to be moving forward and looking forward to some more tough matches next week on the road."
The undefeated Huskies will head to Texas next weekend to face TCU on Friday February 3rd at noon, followed by Baylor on Sunday February 5th at 10 a.m.
