January 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – In their fourth match of the 2017 season the Washington men's tennis team posted their third 7-0 victory on the year, defeating Gonzaga today in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
"It was super for us, coming back and having a full weekend," said head coach Matt Anger. "There was a lot of good tennis out there in all the matches in singles and doubles."
In doubles Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe picked up their second win of the weekend on court one, defeating Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Sam Feit 6-4. The Huskies clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court three by Amit Batta and Jake Douglas, with Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer finishing their match out on court two, winning a battle 7-5.
UW began singles by picking up the first sets on five of six courts, with Batta finishing his match first on court five 6-3, 6-2. Sebastian Hawken picked up his third dual match win this season on court six, defeating Kyle Everly 6-3, 6-1, with Gal Hakak clinching the win for Washington shortly after on court three.
The remaining three matches came down to third sets or tie-breakers, beginning with Joao Barra on court four. After winning his first set 6-3, he and Ronzai Saurombe sat at a 6-6 draw in the second set, with the UW junior pulling out the win by a final score of 6-3, 7-6(2). On court one, 60th ranked Mitch Stewart was taken to a third tie-breaker set, but came out on top 10-1.
Dropping his first set to Vince Rettke, Douglas battled back in the second to win 7-5, forcing a tie-breaker third set. The two sides traded points, but the junior from Rolling Hills, Calif. came out on top in an 11-9 battle, sealing the 7-0 sweep for the Huskies.
"I'm never the biggest fan of match tie-breakers but it was good that our guys were able to concentrate and make their way through that," said Anger. "Everybody's healthy and we're ready to go for next week on the road."
Washington will travel to Athens, Ga. this week for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, where they will be joined by host-school Georgia, Purdue and Alabama. The Huskies will take on Alabama on Friday the 27th, and face either Purdue or Georgia Saturday or Sunday, depending on their result against the Tide.
