INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The University of Washington men's golf team were led by senior Corey Pereira and freshman Sam Warkentin in their first event under new coach Alan Murray as the Dawgs finished 13th with a 37-over 889 (298-295-296) during a windy three courses at Windsong Farm Golf Course in Minnesota.
"It was a tough start to the season for us but we learned and know we have to move forward and continue to get better," said Murray. "We're not as bad as we feel right now and we've got a great group, we just need to figure out how to manage our mistakes and bounce back."
Pereira and Warkentin both tied for 27th with a 7-over 220 following Sunday's final round. Warkentin made major moves over the final 18 as he climbed 23 spots with his 2-under 69, which tied the low round of the day. Starting on hole 10, Warkentin finished his first nine holes at even par and then carded three birdies on the back nine to finish at 2-under moving his final score to 7-over 200.
"Sam shooting a 69 today was really impressive," said Murray. "The winds were completely opposite today and made for a completely new course so Sam handled himself really well. I'm really proud of him and I can see he's going to be a big player for us."
Pereira had a rocky start to the day with blemishes on four holes during the front nine but he bounced back and went even through the final nine to finish tied for 27th.
Senior Frank Garber also climbed up the leaderboard on Sunday as he jumped 16 spots with his final round score of 2-over 73 which featured four birdies, three of which came over the first nine holes. Following the three rounds, Garber finished tied for 41st with a 12-over 225.
Senior Kevin Kwon was just one stroke behind Garber with his 13-over 226. Kwon struggled during the final round posting an 8-over 79 following his rounds of 3-over 74 and 2-over 73 on Saturday. Rounding out the UW crew was junior Jordan Lu who finished tied for 63rd with an 18-over 230 (77-74-80).
In the individual section of the event, sophomore Carl Yuan carded a 1-over 217 (73-69-75) to finish tied for 8th while freshman Henry Lee moved up one spot on the leaderboard following the final 18 holes to finish 13th with a 2-over 223 (75-72-76). Freshman Shamu Bodhidatta carded a 10-over 26 to place tied for 17th (75-70-81).
Additionally, in pro ranks for the Huskies, former Dawg Brock Mackenzie finished tied for third at the Niagara Championship on the Mackenzie Tour after climbing eight spots on the leaderboard during Sunday's final round with his 4-under 67.
The Huskies return to the course September 23 for the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
