Samuel O'Brien (U.S.) and Sam Goertz (Canada) will both travel to Rotterdam next month.
Two more Washington rowers have earned a spot at the Under-23 World Championships next month in Rotterdam as Sam Goertz was selected to the Canada coxed four and Samuel O'Brien won his lightweight double sculls final to win a spot on the U.S. team.
Goertz, who attended Issaquah High, was named to the Canadian team via a selection process. At the U-23 World Championships, he and his crew will row against, among others, a U.S. four made up entirely of Husky rowers as coxwswain Rielly Milne (Woodinville, Wash.) and rowers Ezra Carlson (Eureka, Calif.), Arne Landboe (Shoreline, Wash.), Sean Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) and Sam Pettet (Seattle) won the U.S. U23 trials in the same event on Wednesday.
Thursday morning in New Jersey, O'Brien (Tampa, Fla.) and Nick Montalvo (rowing for Craftsbury Sculling Center), won the lightweight double sculls final in a time of 6:35.50, well ahead of the second-place Undine Barge Club (6:46.89).
Also on Wednesday, UW rower Ben Davison (Inverness, Fla.), who won an Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship in the Huskies' freshman eight in 2015 before taking the last school year off, won the U.S. single sculls competition to earn a trip to Rotterdam.
Aside from Goertz and the seven U.S. team member, several other Husky rowers remain in contention to compete for their countries at the U23 World Championships: Michiel Mantel (Netherlands), Gugliemo Carcano and Luca Lovisolo (Italy) and Viktor Pivac (Serbia). Additionally, two Husky women – Sarah Dougherty (Kent, Wash.) and Marlee Blue (Seattle) – are in the group from which the U.S. team will select its women's eight, coxless four and quad sculls crews.
